English is not my native language. I got acquainted with it at school, continued at university, and still keep bonding with it. However, over time it has immersed in my life so seamlessly that I forget to appreciate this skill.

I search for new information in English on default. This choice I make unconsciously. I almost always manage to find what I need. The same search in my native language returns much fewer results. Freedom to have a choice.

English might change your experience when travelling. Local people will pay extra attention if you use a language that is foreign to them. However, you need to use the language they possibly know. It will show your appreciation if you start with the local language (you can easily learn a few phrases with most language learning apps, e. g. Duolingo) and then switch to English. Connection.

The other thing I do might be minor but still distinctive advantage of speaking English. It is being able to use gadget assistants. I like my phone and partly because I use an assistant. I discussed with people who have the same phone and they are kind of deprived because there is no assistant for my native language. Accessibility.

Back to where we started, it is all about how appreciative we are. Do we notice and value our advantages or take them for granted? Do you feel special? Or do you regard any of your skills special? Do you see what you might be deprived of if you didn’t have that skill? Be thankful. Be felicitous.
