Why Do We Read Books? Or Don’t?

Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones.

Stephen King

This ruminating is for those who don’t read and for those who read a lot. Why do we discover the world differently? Is it because we are different types of people, or is it a type of ignorance.

I was too hard and arrogant considering non-readers to be simple and blind. It was till my friend, who is a smart and interesting person, told me that reading books is boring… because of a lack of imagination. Wow! That was a revelation and changed my views! When I read books, I imagine pictures, and in a while, I might forget the language of the book as I remember only my mind images.

Why do we read books?

  • to travel
  • to let imagination outline
  • to get new ideas
  • to find answers
  • to enjoy a good company while being alone ( an introvert cup of tea)
  • to hide
  • to see a fresh perspective and admit having been wrong
  • to get food for thoughts (I have a note with quotes to refresh the memory later)
  • to learn (and I am not talking about textbooks)

The book is also a friend that you can always take with you wherever you go. Having a good selection of books, you can both cheer you up and learn how to be stronger.

Going back to people who don’t like imagining. They don’t enjoy those possibilities, do they?
